I did some touristy sightseeing while in Charleston South Carolina and I visited Fort Sumter where the Civil War began.  Ironically it was the anniversary of the start of the Civil War and we were on the last ferry to visit that day.  Since it was such a special commemoration,  we were invited to lower the flag.  This is a huge flag and it took all of us to lower it and then fold it carefully.  Our Park Ranger, Antoine Fletcher talked us through the whole thing while detailing the events that led to the first battle.  You could feel the reverence in the crowd and everyone was very proud to be involved, whether they were American or another nationality.  On this Memorial Day my heart goes out to all of the men and women who serve our country as well as the families that have been affected by war and conflict.

I recently visited Shenandoah National Park and stayed at Skylands.  The views are incredible on Skyline Drive and although we only had a short overnight stay, we had dinner at Skylands and tried their Blackberry Cobbler.  Their Blackberry ice cream pie is their signature dessert and I’ll try baking that next.  I have a new love for blackberries and in this area of Virginia they are incredible.
